Curiosa CRÉBILLON (Claude-Prosper Jolyot de) Tansai and Neadarné. Japanese history, with figures. Peking [Paris], se, 1743. 2 volumes in-16 : 12f. 275pp. / 3f. 242pp. illustrated with 4 plates, lacking the frontispiece. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, spines smoothly decorated, headpieces wiped off, red title-pieces, cold fillet on the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, marbled edges. Attached : OVID : De Arte Amandi, ex accuratissima recensione Paris, Nicolle, 1809. In-8, 290pp. with frontispiece by the author. ½ red basane, title and gilt fillets on smooth spine, rubbed. Illustrated edition of this important licentious tale, one of the first works of Crébillon fils. This progressive and revolutionary utopia, which takes place in an imaginary and egalitarian country, is a violent satire against the Cardinal de Rohan, but also targets the Jesuits, the Pope and the Duchess of Maine. Crébillon was locked up for some time in the Château de Vincennes following the publication of the work.
