LA FONTAINE (Jean, de) - Lot 681
LA FONTAINE (Jean, de) Contes et Nouvelles en vers. Amsterdam, se., 1762. 2 volumes in-12 : XIV, 268pp. 1f. 8pp. (notice to the binder) / 1f., VIII, 306pp. 2f. (table), 9-16 (continuation notice to the binder). Illustrated with 2 frontispiece portraits (one of La Fontaine after Hyacinthe RIGAUD, engraved by FICQUET, the other of Charles Eisen, by VISPRÉ), 80 plates out of text by Eisen and culs-de-lampe by Choffard, all engraved on copper by the best artists. The figures for the Cas de Conscience and the Diable de Papefiguière are "uncovered", the figure of Féronde is before the bonnet. Minor soiling on a few leaves, a small tear on one leaf restored. Contemporary red morocco, decorated smooth spines, triple gilt fillet on the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, interior roulette, gilt edges, slight rubbing from use, corners dull. This edition of the Contes de La Fontaine, known as the Fermiers généraux, is one of the most beautiful and pleasant illustrated books of the 18th century; also considered as Eisen's masterpiece. Although quite common, this edition remains highly sought-after and expensive, more or less quoted according to the state (bare or dressed with certain figures).
