VERIEN (Nicolas) Curious and useful book for the sçavans and artists. Composed of three alphabets of simple, double & triple figures with flowers and the first line, accompanied by a large number of mottos, emblems, medals and other hieroglyphic figures. Paris, sur le Quay des Orfèvres, 1685. In-8: title and 63 figures of emblems with twelve subjects with explanations printed on verso (Les Emblèmes et devises latines, espagnoles et italiennes) - title and 154 figures of monograms printed recto-verso except for 20 bis (Les Alphabets de chiffres simples, doubles et triples, fleuronnez etmedaillez, hiéroglyphiques) - title and 16 figures printed recto-verso on 8 plates (Les Supports et cimierz pour les ornemens des armes). Two proofs of plate LII of the first book, one of which has been added to make up for a printing error (text with some old handwritten annotations and corrections). Incomplete with the portrait of the author, the allegorical engraving and 3 plates (figures 15-16 of book II and 9-12 of book III). Contemporary red morocco, spine ribbed and decorated, iron with fleur-de-lis and dolphin crowned at the foot, triple gilt fillet, fleur-de-lis at the corners, coat of arms of the Grand Dauphin in the centre, roulette on the edges, inner gilt roulette, skilful restorations to the headpieces and corners, gilt edges. Rare first edition of one of the most beautiful French collections of emblems and monograms, intended for all those whose trade required a pictorial recourse to symbols: engravers, painters, sculptors, goldsmiths, embroiderers, locksmiths.
