Letters of seal - Lot 943
Letters of seal MIRABEAU (Honoré Gabriel de Riqueti comte de) Of the Letters of Seal and the State Prisons. Posthumous work, composed in 1778. Hamburg, 1782. 2 parts in one volume in-8 : XIV, 1f., 366pp., (1) - 237pp. ½ marbled contemporary tan basane, red title-piece and gilt fillets on smooth spine, head-cap torn off, red edges. First edition of this work on arbitrary imprisonments and state prisons. The work is said to have been composed during the author's imprisonment in Vincennes, but Barbier rather thinks that they were written by the bailli de Mirabeau, uncle of the count, as they contain too many quotations to believe that they were written in prison. Provenances: 2 printed bookplates: Niviller and De Clos - La Balme.
