ARGENS (Jean-Baptiste de Boyer d') Lettres Cabalistiques, ou Correspondance Philosophique, historique et critique, entre deux cabalistes, divers esprits élémentaires, et le seigneur Astaroth. [The Hague, Paupie, 1769-1770 (title pages missing)]. 6 volumes in-12; title pages absent. 178 letters. Contemporary marbled fawn basane, spines decorated, small leather tears on some spines, red title and tomaisons, one bit cracked, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges. Attached : NAUDÉ (Gabriel) : Apologie pour les grands hommes soupçonnez de magie. Last edition where one added some remarks. Amsterdam, Pierre Humbert, 1712. In-12 : frontispiece, 9f., 470pp. Contemporary speckled tan calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title, leather missing at the foot, corners dull. Interesting little work in which the author defends scientists wrongly accused of magic or sorcery, including Socrates, Pythagoras, Democritus, Aristotle, Geber, Raymond Lulle, Arnauld de Villeneuve, Paracelsus, Agrippa, Bacon, Albert the Great etc. This edition contains 178 letters, two volumes more than the original edition (The Hague, 1737-1738), which contained 120. "In this curious work, put on the Index on July 8, 1742, the Marquis d'Argens shows himself, as in most of his writings, an avowed enemy of religion and describes, in a sometimes somewhat free manner, the foibles and ridiculousness of the various denominations, aiming particularly at the Jesuits" (Dorbon).
