Martyrology - Lot 304
Martyrology CAVALIERI (Jean-Baptiste) - [CIRCIGNANI (Nicolas)] Collection of engravings composed by assembling 2 series of engravings from the 16th century: Ecclesia militantis triumphi sive deo amabilium martyrum gloriosa pro Christi - 1583 (engraved title and 27 engraved plates) and Ecclesiae anglicanae trophae siuc sanctor martyrum quipro Christo catholica - 1584 (engraved title and 35 engraved plates; plates 15 to 18 are missing) and 4 isolated orphan engravings (numbered 1 to 4) The work is titled manually "Actus martyrum - Sancti per fiden vicerunt regna - 1831". In-4, the engravings are mounted in alternating white leaves on old laid paper. Some of them (about ten), at the beginning of the volume, are handwritten and contain the cards of the martyrs in reference with the date of their calendar feast. 2 or 3 plates enhanced in color (certainly later); deep blacks, especially for the second series. ½ 19th century basane, spine smoothly ornamented, boards covered with vat paper, rubbing from use. Collection containing two rare sets of 16th century engravings (the work is considered complete with the two parts collected), unfortunately partly incomplete with some plates. The engravings are based on models of frescoes by the painter Niccolò Circignani (known as il Pomarancio).
