Paris, Vve Renouard, 1859-67. 9 large volumes in-8. ½ red morocco, title and tomaisons gilt on spine, paper quite white. A very good copy. René Louis de Voyer de Paulmy, French statesman and writer, was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under Louis XV from 1744 to 1747, but is best known for his literary and historical works, in particular his Memoirs and his Journal. His Considérations sur le Gouvernement de la France (1764), which was praised by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Du contrat social, was mainly composed in 1734. In it the author examines "how far democracy can be admitted in a monarchical state. »
