LE QUOC LOC (1918-1987) - Lot 50
LE QUOC LOC (1918-1987) Fishermen's village by a lake, 1942 Lacquer and gold highlights on wood panel. Dyptic signed lower right and dated 80 x 60 cm each panel. (Some vertical cracks on the left panel). Provenance: Former Charles Coulier Collection. Charles Coulier settled in Indochina with his family in 1923 and bought a lot of farmland. In parallel to his activity as a landowner, he also owned a bakery located in Rue Paul Bert in Hanoi. In 1943, he bought this lacquer directly from Lé Quoc Loc's workshop and brought it back to France in 1947, when he left Vietnam for good. By descent to the present owner. Le Quoc Loc was born in 1918 in the province of Hung Yen on the left bank of the Red River. He graduated in 1942 from the famous Hanoi School of Fine Arts founded by Victor Tardieu. He became a master lacquerer and opened his own workshop in Hanoi the same year. Today he is considered as one of the great Vietnamese lacquer masters as Nguyen Pahn Chanh, Nguyen Gia Tri or Pham Hâu. Our lacquer panel evokes with elegance and refinement the Vietnamese culture.
