English school of the XIXth century, follower of John Freder - Lot 95
English school of the XIXth century, follower of John Frederic Lewis (1804-1876) A harem interior (sketch) Oil on paper mounted on canvas 23 x 31 cm Early 19th century (Some tears without missing) Without frame Orientalism in painting began in the 18th century, either with travelers like Jean-Baptiste Van Mour or the sublime Jean-Etienne Liotard; or with exotic and often erotic reveries illustrated by Carle Van Loo, François Boucher and many others. The harem was the object of all fantasies, especially since it was essentially hidden from outside view. The beautiful study in oil on paper that we present dates from the first decades of the 19th century. One does not yet feel, in this peaceful page of daily life at the Sublime Porte, either the outbursts of the Romantics, or the sulphurous sensuality of the future "pompiers".
