William de LEFTWICH-DODGE (1867-1935) Autumn Oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated 98. 113 x 87 cm. Original painting used as a cover for the copy n°103 of the Figaro Illustré, in October 1898. Provenance: Important Bordeaux collection around the Art Nouveau. William de Leftwich Dodge is an American painter, born in 1867 in Bedford (Virginia), his family moved to Europe when he was twelve years old. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, where he obtained the Prix d'Atelier. Known for his mural compositions, done mainly in the United States for public and private buildings, such as the northwest pavilion of the Library of Congress in Washington in 1895, he was also a very fashionable portrait painter.
