Maroquins with the arms of Baron de Lassus
[It was published by Baron Marie-Marc de Lassus around 1869]. Slne [Saint-Gaudens, imprimerie Abadie], 1609 [circa 1869].
4 volumes in-8; illustrated with a portrait by F. Dupont, here before the letter, and 8 illustrations, here replaced by the 7 original watercolors and a pencil drawing, all signed. Each illustration is protected by an opaque serpente on which indications concerning it have been transferred by hand (perhaps by Baron de Lassus himself). Each of the four short stories has its own title and pagination. Edition on laid paper, limited to 25 copies, here no. 1. The best possible copy of this work.
Red morocco signed GRUEL (each story has been bound separately), ornate ribbed spines, fleurons on spines differing slightly from volume to volume, large floral garlands framing the boards, gilt arms of the de Lassus family in the center of the boards, filleted edges, interior lace, gilt edges. Copy with full margins.
A rare and sought-after pastiche, written in 17th-century style and spelling, on life and mores in Comminges.
The "Deviz Commingeois" comprises four stories published in 1869 under the pseudonym of "Philosofe Marcuz de Montréal de Rivière".
Probably bound for its publisher and probable author, Baron Marie-Marc de Lassus; or perhaps for his son, Bertrand de Lassus.
Provenance: Copy from the de Lassus library at Château de Valmirande, with the gilded arms of the Comte de Lassus on the boards.
Bertrand de Lassus, one of the eminent personalities of the Pyrenees, who for many years led the lavish existence of a dainty man devoted to the exciting games of hunting and climbing (H. Spont).
