CÉNAC MONCAUT (Justin Édouard Mathieu) - Lot 76
CÉNAC MONCAUT (Justin Édouard Mathieu) Aquitaine et Languedoc ou Histoire Pittoresque de la Gaule Méridionale. Paris, chez tous les Libraires, 1849. 2 volumes large in-8 : 2f., 536pp. / 2f., 632pp. ; illustrations in text and 9 plates hors texte woodcut by CLAVEL and CHAMBARON after Alexandre BIDA and Léon SOULIE (4/5). Paper quite white, excellent condition. Contemporary ½ black chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated. A good copy. The original is entitled: "Aquitaine et Languedoc, Romans Historique Nationaux. Médella - le Berger d'Alaric (vol. 2) Lampagie - le Duc Bernard. Paris, Bazille-Urbain, Poirée ; Toulouse, Paya, 1843-44". The collation is strictly the same for the second of 1847, the third of 1848 and finally the last of 1849. The same printer handled all 4 editions, as evidenced here by a title from the original used as a flyleaf. CENAC-MONCAUT's serious approach to popular history, which contains all the ingredients of Romanticism, was successful, given the 4 editions in less than 10 years. (Labadie 2585)(Vicaire II 151)(Massie 200)(Lespy 142) not in Lorenz
