M'hamed ISSIAKHEM (1928-1985) - Lot 69
M'hamed ISSIAKHEM (1928-1985) "Young woman in an interior" Oil on canvas signed lower left 100 x 82 cm M'Hammed Issiakem is one of the founders of contemporary Algerian painting. He arrived in Paris in 1951 and attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Paris where he met his alter ego Kateb Yacine and also trained in the studios of Edouard Goerg and Raymond Legueult. At that time, he regularly stayed in a hotel in the Latin Quarter and became friends with the owners and offered them this painting, which has remained in the family ever since. A resident of Casa Velasquez in 1962, he returned to Algiers with Kateb Yacine and worked until 1964 for the newspaper Alger Républicain. A founding member of the National Union of Plastic Arts, he joined the National School of Fine Arts in Algiers, where he became a teacher. Member of the group of 35, he participates in many exhibitions in Algeria and around the world. We owe him many graphic works, landscapes, abstract compositions but it is in the art of female portraiture that the painter has particularly distinguished himself.
