ALBERT GLEIZES (1881-1953) Villon - Lot 58
ALBERT GLEIZES (1881-1953) Villon Project: Four legendary figures of the century, (circa 1937) Gouache 50 x 65 cm (30 x 60.5 cm) This is a decoration project for the Institute of Arts and Crafts in 1938. In 1938, Albert Gleizes receives with Jacques Villon the commission for the decoration of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers de Paris. This gouache is a project for the decoration of the auditorium. Even though there was no final realization, it gave Gleizes the opportunity to work on subjects that he later reused: Leonardo da Vinci, Aladdin, Simbad and Icarus. Each of these figures refers to a mythology linked to the idea of balance between the laws of nature and human engineering, a theme that lends itself perfectly to the Conservatory, the place of technical knowledge. Provenance: Galerie Françoise Tournier Bibliography: Anne Varichon, Albert Gleizes, catalogue raisonné, volume II, Somogy Éditions d'Art, 1998, described and reproduced n°1579, p. 515 We thank Mrs Anne Varichon for having kindly verbally confirmed the authenticity of this work on March 25, 2020. She will be able to issue a certificate at the expense of the purchaser.
