ÉMILE GALLÉ (1846-1904) Tempus Stellæ (Time of the Star) & Helleborus also known as Christmas Roses Rare baluster-shaped vase with a wide annular neck. Proof out of glass tinted green of water in the mass; the low part left translucent, the high part treated in light opacity. The rotating decoration of hellebores, made with polychrome enamels and gold; the stars around the neck and the title rubbed with gold. Circa 1895/1900. Signed GALLÉ in double line, located Nancy and bears the inscription Déposé, engraved under the base. H. 14.5 cm D. 18 cm Note: Émile Gallé refers us, through this theme and title Tempus Stellæ (Time of the Star), to the Star of Bethlehem (or Christmas Star) which, in the Gospel according to Matthew, announces to the oriental magi the birth of Jesus and then, according to Christian tradition, guides them to Jerusalem and Bethlehem. To artistically illustrate and support this title, he uses, as floral decorative motifs, Helleborus, also known as Christmas roses.
