SALVADOR DALI (1904-1989) Virgil comforts Dante Illustration for Hell, song 2 for Dante Alighieri's work illustrated by Salvador Dalí, The Divine Comedy, Joseph Foret, The Clear Hours (1959-1963), 1951. Watercolour, sepia ink and pencil on cardboard. 41.8 x 29.9 cm. Signed and dated in sepia ink at the bottom centre in a "Dalí / 1951" cartouche. Inscribed on the back by a third in pencil in the lower centre "Inferno / fuori testo / in frontespizio" and in the lower right "48". French customs stamps on the back upper left and lower left "DOUANES /importation / PARIS / CENTRALE". Print reproduced in: Field, Albert, The Official Catalog of the Graphic Works of Salvador Dalí, The Salvador Dalí Archives, New York 1996 (English), p.195, nr.ci64-03-002 This watercolour is listed in the Descharnes Archives under the n°d6970_1951.
