Pierre-Georges THERON (1918-2000) - Lot 237
Pierre-Georges THERON (1918-2000) The Vine and the Wheat. Two mural decoration projects for the city of Nerac. Pen, Indian ink, watercolour, gouache. Each: 27 x 44.5 cm. Workshop stamp at bottom right. 1950s. Pierre Théron had received rigorous training as a great decorator from his masters, Roganeau in Bordeaux, Jean Dupas and André Lhote in Paris. His know-how enabled him to respond to numerous monumental commissions, either for industrial sites (one hundred meters of murals at the SAFT factory in Bordeaux, Shell Berre refinery in Pauillac), or for public institutions (high schools, Bordeaux rectorate, Maison du Paysan in rue Ferrère, etc.). He was also one of the most important suppliers of tapestry cardboard for Aubusson. Our projects show his technique characteristic of the decorations of the 1950s and 1960s, inherited from André Lhote: rural landscapes treated with fragmented touches of bright colours, compositions rigorously structured like mosaics, introduction of birds (which the artist studied with passion). It is touching to see that these studies were intended for Nérac, his birthplace.
