SET OF 21 INK AND WATERCOLOUR DRAWINGS on paper with oriental characters Late 18th/early 19th century. 25 x 19 cm and 27,5 x 18 cm. (Old traces of wetness in the margin) Certainly due to a travelling artist, this suite of drawings is of great ethnographic interest. The analysis of the costumes shows that the draftsman began his journey in Eastern Europe, stayed in the Ottoman Empire and travelled as far as Central Asia and even China. Some of the Asian subjects are astonishing: we see a puppet showman, a scene of capital execution or a kind of shaman wearing horns. The rarity of these representations, their spontaneity, indicate an observation after nature. All the drawings are originally mounted on thick brown cardboard. Their execution can be dated to shortly before or shortly after 1800.
