Marine - Lot 633
Marine DUGUAY-TROUIN (René) Memoirs of M. du Gué-Trouin, Squadron Leader of the Armies of S.M.T.C. and Grand Cross of the Military Order of St Louïs. Amsterdam, Mortier, 1730. In-8: 4f, 290pp; with 2 vignettes. Small restorations in the outer margins of the first 4 leaves. Contemporary fawn glazed calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title page, cold fillet on the boards, gilt roulette on the edges and inside, red edges. A good copy. First edition in-8 "pirate" of the memoirs of this famous sailor born in St Malo in 1673, made on a copy that de Villepontoux had taken from the original manuscript owned by Cardinal Dubois. An in-12 edition appeared the same year. Polak reports only this last one, collation identical to this one which is well in-8. The latter had been entrusted with the manuscript to read it but died too soon and Duguay-Trouin had great difficulty in recovering it. The author did not want to publish the "Memoirs" during his lifetime, and it is in 1740 that Godart de Beauchamps had them published (with a continuation from 1715 to 1736). This 1730 edition is not complete and full of errors, but it does contain curious details "on the stormy youth of Duguay-Trouin, which he has since suppressed at the invitation of Cardinal de Fleury in writing.
