Militaria HERMANN (Hugo) De Militia Equestri Antiqua et Nova ad regem Philippum IV. Libri Quinque. Antverpiae, Moreti, 1630. In folio: 4f, 344pp, 5f; very fine engraved title by Corneille Galle and 6 double-page engraved plates and engravings in the text showing the formation of battle plans with infantry and cavalry positions. Nice mark of Plantin in fine. Light staining at head and foot of first few leaves. Contemporary fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, lack of leather at one box, red title page, head cap missing, lack of head cap at foot, spine ends split, triple gilt filleting at margins, rubbed, red edges. First edition of this important treatise on ancient and modern cavalry. Includes a chapter on the military use of elephants and camels. The engravings are of a remarkable finesse, they can also be attributed to Corneille Galle.
