Arms of the Marquis of Villeneuve-Trans RACINE (Jean) OEuvres. Paris, Le Breton, 1760. 3 volumes in-4 : 2f, XVIII, 3f, 414pp / 2f, IV, 447pp / 2f, IV, 412pp; illustrated with a portrait of Racine by Daullé, 12 figures, 60 caps and 13 vignettes by various engravers. Numerous notes in the hand of the Marquis de Villeneuve-Trans in the margins of several leaves. Contemporary glazed blond calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-pieces, green tomaisons, triple gilt fillet on the boards, central arms, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt lace inside, marbled edges. First edition of this very beautiful edition, the most successful of Jacques de Sève's illustrations. Provenance: Copy with the arms of the Marquis d'Hélion-Charles-Édouard de Villeuneuve-Trans (collector of books with figures), with the motto "To the first Marquis of France". The Marquis was one of the most curious figures of his time, he had embraced democratic ideas and welcomed the Revolution of 1848, then that of 1870. He was an enthusiastic lover of books with figures, of which he assembled an incomparable collection with his coat of arms on the cover. Abundant notes in his hand in the margins.
