SCALIGER (Julius Caesar) Iulii Caesaris Scaligeri Exotericarum exercitationum lib. XV. De subtilitate ad Hieronymum Cardanum Frankfurt, Welchel, 1576. In-8: 8f, 1129pp, (93); numerous woodcuts in the text. Beautiful contemporary saddle-skin binding, beautiful cold decoration on boards, central vignette depicting knights, date 1579, spine ribbed, decoration between boxes. Second edition of this famous Scaligerian critique of Cardan's De Subtilitate, a work in which the famous physician and philosopher describes and lists all the problems inherent to the subtlety of matter. Scaliger's book was first published in 1557. A reference work in academic circles, he counted among his admirers Lipsius, Bacon, Kepler and Leibniz. Provenances: several handwritten bookplates dated 1577 and 1643, printed bookplate from the library of Jacques Vieillard.
