DESCARTES (René) The Man of René Descartes and a Treatise on the Formation of the Foetus. With the remarks of Louys de La Force on the Tract of Man & on the figures by luy even invented. Paris, Le Gras, 1664. In-4: 34f, 448pp, 4f; illustrated with 49 beautiful woodcuts in the text. Notes and inscriptions in margins, small stains on some leaves, numerous handwritten notes on endpapers. Contemporary glazed brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, cold fillet on the boards, gilt border on the edges, red edges. First edition of this work which has been considered as the first complete treatise on human physiology and a physiological appendix to his "Discourse on Method"; Descartes considered the human body as a material machine, directed by a rational soul located in the pineal gland. Provenance: Several annotations of possessions including one announcing the ownership of a surgeon of St Macaire.
