BERTRAND de MOLLEVILLE (Antoine-François) Secret Memoirs for the History of the Last Year of the Reign of Louis XVI, King of France. London, Strahan & Cadell ; Paris, merchants de nouveautés, 1797 3 volumes in-8 : 2f., 320pp. / 2f., 352pp. / 2f., 312pp. Contemporary marbled fawn basane, spines smoothly decorated, red title-pieces, green tomaisons, spotted red edges. These memoirs give a faithful view of the political life of the revolutionary period. Original edition given after an English version made on the manuscript. Intendant of Brittany from 1784 to 1788, in favour of the meeting of the Estates General, then in favour of dissolving the National Assembly, Bertrand de Molleville was Minister of the Navy from October 1791 to March 1792, and had to resign because of the opposition he encountered in the Assembly concerning the insurrection in Saint-Domingue and the help he gave to the emigration of naval officers. He had to go into hiding and emigrate in October 1792, and entered the secret service of Louis XVI.
