CARNOT (Hippolyte) - DAVID (of Angers) - [BARÈRE (Bertrand, dit Barrère de VIEUZAC)] Memoirs. Preceded by a historical note. Paris, Labiette, 1842. 4 volumes in 2 volumes in-8 : 2f., 441pp. - 2f. 436pp. / 2f. 394pp. - 2f. 480pp. with frontispiece portrait. Scattered spotting, light staining in margin at head of a few leaves of second volume. Contemporary ½ plum basane, title, gilt fillets and tomaisons on spine, rubbing on boards. Bertrand Barère, French Revolutionary politician and jurist, appointed rapporteur of the Comité de salut public, nicknamed "Anacreon of the guillotine". Proscribed under the Directory, amnestied under the Consulate and the Empire, exiled under the Restoration, returned to France under Louis-Philippe, he died at 85 years old, general councillor in Tarbes. During this last period, he was elected three times as a deputy by the voters of the Hautes-Pyrénées (he was the initiator of the creation of this department). One of the few members of the Committee of Public Safety who died in his bed!
