Witchcraft - Lot 220
Witchcraft AUBIN (Nicolas)] Histoire des Diables de Loudun, ou de la Possession des Religieuses Ursulines, et de la Condamnation & du Supplice d'Urbain Grandier, curé de la même ville. Amsterdam, expenses of the Company, 1752. In-12: 378pp, 1f. Pagination errors in the preliminary leaves. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, smooth spine decorated, red title-piece, lack of headband, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges. Famous satire against Richelieu. The work tells the surprising story of Urbain Grandier, a worldly and libertine clergyman, accused of bewitchment by the Ursulines of Loudun who were passionately hysterical towards him. He was condemned to be burned as a sorcerer in 1634 after his witchcraft trial. Provenance: Ex-libris printed Library L. Richou.
