ROHAN (Ferdinand-Maximilien-Mériadec de) - Lot 295
ROHAN (Ferdinand-Maximilien-Mériadec de) Letter of Prince Ferdinand de Rohan to the Count of Ghistelles Prefoncier in Liege, thanking him for taking him as coadjutor (auxiliary). He signifies to him that he will eagerly carry out any commission or employment that he will order him to do: "If circumstances attract you to Paris I find myself attached not only for esteem but also by the most sincere recognition; if you had some commissions for this country, employ me, I beg you, and be persuaded of the eagerness that I will have to show you in all occasions, the feelings of respect and friendship with which I am, Sir, your very humble and very obedient servant" - Paris, September 1, 1761. Signature. In-4, missive folds, address of the addressee, red wax seal with the arms of the Rohan family. Under glass and gilt stick. Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan (1738-1813), French aristocrat and clergyman of the 18th century. He was the chaplain of the Empress Josephine de Beauharnais. He was a descendant of the House of Rohan, one of the most influential families of the high nobility of the time, through both his father and his mother. He was prior and doctor of the Sorbonne, grand provost of the church of Strasbourg before being named archbishop of Bordeaux on December 26, 1769. Confirmed to this office on March 12, 1770, he was ordained bishop on April 8. He only stayed there for a short time. In 1772, he had the Palais Rohan (now the Bordeaux City Hall) built and sold land on the site of the area that now bears the name of Meriadeck. He left the city before the building was completed. On 28 January 1781, he was appointed Prince-Archbishop of Cambrai. He was the last commendatory abbot of the abbey of Mont Saint-Quentin. Having refused to take the oath to the civil constitution of the clergy, he left Cambrai for the abbey of Saint-Ghislain de Mons and resigned in 1802. On 2 July 1808, he was created a count of the Empire.
