Ballets Russes - Lot 298
Ballets Russes BOISSONNAS & EGGLER Photographic portrait of the Russian dancer and choreographer Leonid Massine ( Leonid Fiodorovitch Miassine) as Joseph (1914). Silver print of the period mounted on cardboard, with the name of the photographer at the bottom of the document, under a hexagonal glass, old sticky paper on the edge, small ring of hanging on the back. Leonid Fyodorovich Miassin (1896-1979) studied dance at the age of eight at the Imperial Bolshoi School in Moscow. From 1915 to 1921, he was the principal choreographer of Serge de Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. After the departure of Vaslav Nijinsky, the company's great male star, it was Massine who danced his roles. He choreographed Parade to music by Erik Satie in 1917. On this occasion, Pablo Picasso painted a harlequin using him as a model. After Diaghilev's death and that of the Ballets Russes, Massine set about revitalizing the world of ballet; he became involved with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo from 1933. At the Paris Opera, he choreographed the Symphonie fantastique in 1957 with Claude Bessy as performer (Wikipedia).
