In-8: 2f., 2137pp. with a frontispiece portrait of the author and 4 autograph letters signed by Félicité Lamennais dated 1833 (x2), 1834, 1837 and 1846. Small stains and light banding in the margins of some leaves. Copy with large margins. ½ burgundy morocco with corners à la Bradel signed DURET, gilt head, publisher's cover preserved. Attached from the same : Affaires de Rome. Paris, Cailleux & Cie, 1836-37. In-8 : 2f, 401pp, 2f. - 99pp, (1) (first letter from Abbé Combalot to Lamennais) - 2f, 189pp. (second letter from Abbé Combalot to Lamennais). Small scattered spotting in places. ½ green basane of the time, smooth spine romantically decorated. Collection of texts including his account of his trip to Italy, his denunciation of the evils of the Church and a presentation of the conflict that opposed him to the papacy. Rare first edition. Lamennais' major work and one of the beautiful prose texts of Romantic literature. He exposes his conception of Christianity, affirms the equality of all men and calls for the respect of liberties, freedom of conscience and political freedom, and marks his revolt and his break with the Vatican.
