Natural history - Color plates LESSON (René Primevère) Natural History of Birds of Paradise and Epimics. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, sd. (1829-30). In-4: VII, 34pp, 248pp, 43 hors-texte plates by PRETRE and OUDART engraved by SCHMELZ, HEINA, LEGRAND, DUMENIL etc., all heightened in colour and gummed at the time (the plates are numbered 1 to 40 plus 2 bis and one ter) Some foxing in places. contemporary blue percaline, smooth spine decorated, double fillet on the boards, one hinge weak, gilt edges. Born in Rochefort in 1794, Lesson was a pharmacist in the navy. A renowned naturalist and ornithologist, he accompanied Louis-Isidore Duperrey in 1822-25 on the expedition "Voyage au Tour du Monde undertaken on the Corvette la Coquille" of which he gave a report in 1839. His brother, Pierre Adolphe, surgeon of the navy, devoted himself rather to botany and participated in the voyage of Dumont-d'Urville on the Astrolabe (Nissen 550).
