FRENCH ECOLE IN THE 1820s, FOLLOWING Claude Joseph VERNET Seaport, the South or the Calm and Sunset on a Misty Day. Pair of paintings. In 18th century wood and stucco frames decorated with shells and foliage for one replica and the other made by the Tournadre house, boulevard Haussmann in Paris. H.: 54 cm, L.: 81.5 cm. The Midi is the resumption of the composition of Joseph Vernet painted for Randon de Boisset and preserved in Paris, in the Musée de la Marine (Florence Ingersoll-Smouse, Joseph Vernet, peintre de marine, 1714 - 1789, Paris, 1926, vol. I, p., n°, plate). Le Soleil couchant is a remake of the composition preserved in the Musée d'Amiens (commissioned by the Maréchal de Noailles around 1773, deposited by the Louvre in Amiens in 1999, op. cit, vol. I, p.67, n°444, plate XXXX, fig.92).
