Jean Jules Henry GEOFFROY known as Géo Geoffroy (1853-1924) - Lot 151
Jean Jules Henry GEOFFROY known as Géo Geoffroy (1853-1924) Young girl and her dog. Oil on canvas signed lower left 150 x 100 cm. Provenance: Collection of the South West of France. By descent to the present owner Pupil of Léon Bonnat and Adolphe Yvon, Jean Geoffroy made his debut at the 1874 Salon and then exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, where he became a member. A painter of children and the humble, he was one of the representatives of the naturalist movement, a French artistic movement active between 1880 and 1920 which took a stand in favour of the people and the world of the worker, who until then had escaped any representation in Western painting. But it is the world of childhood and the family that inspires Géo Goeffroy and he uses his knowledge learned at the School of Fine Arts to faithfully represent the child as he is in his environment and he integrates into his painting a remarkable realism which makes his compositions so touching. This humanist vision put at the service of the 3rd Republic brought him official recognition and in 1882 he was appointed member of the Commission of school imagery and obtained a commission of five large paintings by the Ministry of National Education. In the centre of the composition on a monochrome background, the girl and the dog are lit by a soft light that attracts the viewer's gaze. In a calm and serene atmosphere, we perceive the complicity between the girl and her dog. This harmonious and delicate work is a perfect summary of Géo Goeffroy's painting.
