Santiago RUSIÑOL (1861-1931) - Lot 166
Santiago RUSIÑOL (1861-1931) View of Girona. Oil on canvas, signed lower left. 78 x 104,5 cm (Accident on the lower left and lack of material on the right border and in the middle). Santiago Rusiñol was born in Barcelona in 1861 into a wealthy family in the textile industry. In 1889, he gave up everything and went to Paris to devote himself to painting. He met his compatriots Ramon Casas and Miguel Utrillo in Montmartre during this first Parisian stay. After naturalist subjects, Rusiñol turned to symbolism, influenced by Whistler, and for a time he depicted melancholic solitary women in an interior before becoming the painter of deserted gardens. Rusiñol is one of the representatives of Catalan Modernism, he frequents and animates the famous cabaret Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona. The artist did not limit himself to painting, he was also a writer, playwright and collector. Between 1908 and 1929, Rusiñol made frequent visits to Girona. We date our painting from 1911 thanks to a photograph of the artist making this painting on the banks of the Onyar, the river that runs through the centre of Girona. This photograph was given to us by Mercedes Palau-Ribes O'Callaghan, whom we thank.
