In-8 : 16f. 365pp. 65f. A strip of paper cut in the margin at the head of the title page. Brown calf of the time rubbed, spine ribbed, gilt fleurons between boxes, a split spine, central gilt medallion of an ecumenical society framed by a cold fillet with gilt fleurons in spandrels. The Council of Trent was the nineteenth ecumenical council recognized by the Catholic Church. Convened by Pope Paul III on May 22, 1542, in response to demands made by Martin Luther in the context of the Protestant reform, it began on December 13, 1545 and ended on December 4, 1563. Its twenty-five sessions lasted eighteen years and covered five pontificates (Paul III, Julius III, Marcel II, Paul IV and Pius IV). They were held in Trent in the cathedral of San Vigilio, then in Bologna and finally again in Trent, in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore.
