[JANSENISM] - Lot 134
[JANSENISM] Le Jansénisme abatu, ou instruction sur la bulle de notre Saint Père le Pape Clément XI portant condamnation de l'hérésie & du livre de Jansenius. Liège, Broncard, 1708. In-12 : 6f, 174pp, (1) Contemporary fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title page, gilt roulette on the edges. A good copy. The Unigenitus bull is the apostolic constitution in the form of a bull that Pope Clement XI published in September 1713 to attack Jansenism. It targets more particularly Pasquier Quesnel and condemns as false and heretical one hundred and one propositions extracted from the Réflexions morales (1692). Far from putting an end to the divisions in the Church, this bull provoked a coalition of several oppositions: Gallican, richerist and Jansenist. Opposition to the bull was reawakened during the Regency and called for a general council. From then on, Jansenism was built in opposition to the proclamations of the Bull. To put an end to this situation, several bishops, under the inspiration of Louis XIV himself, asked the pope to issue a bull to replace the one they could not admit.
