For the Rector and University against the Jesuits plaintiffs, & requesting the entherinement of the letters patent obtained by them, in order to be able to read & teach in the said University. Paris, Petit-Pas, 1612. (Attached in the work) Letters of thanks that the University awarded to Monsieur de La Martelière. In-12: 2f. 95pp. 4f. (numbered 41-48 for the letters of thanks). Postcardboard in the Bradel style, black title in long on the spine. Capital piece in the history of the relations between the Jesuits and the University of Paris. By letters patent of October 12, 1609, Henri IV had granted the Jesuits the right to teach in their Parisian college, provoking the hostility of the Sorbonne. Following the assassination of the King and the implication of the Society in the regicide, the Faculty decided to oppose their arrival and filed an appeal before the Parliament of Paris, a summons being served on the Jesuits on 15 December 1611. Pierre de La Martelière pleaded for the University, Jacques de Montholon for the Jesuits. At the end of the hearings, the general lawyer Servin summoned the Jesuits to conform to the positions of the Sorbonne and the Parliament of Paris ratified these conclusions.
