Original Edition - Red morocco signed Chambolle-Duru PASCAL (Blaise) The Provinciales or the letters written by Louis de Montalte, to a Provincial of his friends, & to the RR. PP. Jesuits: on the Subject of the Morals, & Politics of these Fathers. Cologne, de la Vallée, 1657. In-4: title, advertissement (6pp.); the first fifteen letters were printed in the form of a booklet of 8 pages; the third is preceded by the Response of the provincial to the first two letters (1p.); the Refutation of the answer to the twelfth letter (8pp.) is placed after the thirteenth letter; the letters 16 to 18 are composed of 12 pages. First printing of the warning, noted "Advertissement sur les XVII. Lettres". Copy enriched with 2 pieces : - Letter to R.P. Annat, on his writing which has for title, La Bonne Foy des Jansénistes, &c. (4pp.). - Defense of the professors of Theology of the University of Bordeaux against a writing entitled; Letter of a Theologian to an Officer of the Parliament, concerning the question if the book entitled Ludovici Montaltii Litterae, &c. is heretical. Slne, 1660 (64pp.) 19th century red morocco signed CHAMBOLLE-DURU (1865), spine ribbed and decorated, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, double gilt fillet on the edges, large inner garland, gilt edges. A fine copy. First edition of the 18 provincial letters. These letters had been printed separately and clandestinely to be distributed for free or to be sold for two sols six deniers. First edition copy for the title and the warning. The first one appeared on January 23, 1656 and the last on March 24, 1657. They were gathered in the summer of 1657 under a general title under the pseudonym of Louis de Montalte, increased by 3 sheets of warning ending with a Rondeau aux pères jésuites. They had been printed at first separately and clandestinely, without general title, to escape the censorship.
