Jansenism [PASCAL (Blaise) ] Les Provinciales ou lettres escrittes par Louis de Montalte à un provincial de ses amis et aux RR. PP. Jesuits, on the morals and politics of these Fathers: Translated into Latin by Guillaume Wendrock [Pierre Nicole], theologian of Saltzbourg. Cologne, Winfelt, 1684. In-8: 20f., 613pp. Text on two columns in English, Latin, Spanish and Italian. Antique stiff vellum, handwritten title on spine. Interesting quadrilingual edition. The Provinciales, are a set of eighteen fictional letters, written by Blaise Pascal. Published between January 1656 and March 1657, they first aimed at defending the Jansenist theologian Antoine Arnauld, threatened to be condemned by the Sorbonne, before turning to a criticism of the Society of Jesus.
