BERNARDIN de SAINT-PIERRE (Jacques-Henri) - Lot 234
BERNARDIN de SAINT-PIERRE (Jacques-Henri) Paul et Virginie. Paris, Curmer, 1838. In-8: LVI, 459pp, (1); illustrated with 456 vignettes, 29 plates on China paper, a color map, a portrait of the author on steel. Scattered foxing, more or less strong depending on the leaves. ½ green filleted chagrin with corners, smooth spine decorated, central gilt title and long romantic irons with floral motifs, cold-stamped interlacing at head and foot, slight rubbing. The 6 portraits announced for this edition are missing; however, the first copies put on sale of this edition contained only the portrait of the author (without the 6 portraits), this series of six portraits was integrated in the work only from July 1838; the few copies without portraits had been offered for sale since the end of 1837. It is thus certainly one of the very first copies distributed.
