OEnology - Vine - Lot 236
OEnology - Vine BERTALL (Charles Albert d'Arnoux) La Vigne - Voyage autour des Vins de France - Étude Physiologique, Anecdotique, Historique, Humoristique et même Scientifique. Paris, Plon, 1878. In-4: 2f., 660pp. illustrated with a frontispiece, 94 full-page plates and nearly 400 drawings in the text, all by BERTALL. Contemporary burgundy ½ chagrin, spine ornamented with thematic vine irons between boxes, publisher's cover preserved. Good copy with all margins. First edition in first printing. Reviews the different vintages of Burgundy, Gironde and Champagne and tells, with a lot of humor, a lot of amusing anecdotes about wines, vineyards, winemakers, owners and tasters. The full-page illustrations are all entitled "Actors and Actresses - Costumes and Faces" and numbered from 1 to 94 (Bitting and Vicaire announce in their respective bibliographies 64 pl. h.t: it is a typing error for 94); moreover, the plates are included in the pagination. Vicaire will correct this error in the Manuel de l'Amateur de Livres du XIXe (Vicaire I 439-440)(Vicaire Gastro - 87).
