Off-text plates missing. ½ fawn basane of the time, ornate smooth spines, gilt fillets, red title and endpapers, black cold irons. A complete collection of its 26 volumes of texts by Jesuit missionaries in China, the Levant, India and America, without the plates. The travel reports are the work of Le Gobien, Du Halde, Ingoult, etc. In addition to relating the sufferings of the missionaries, the joys of numerous baptisms, the martyrdoms as well, they propose in the same correspondence real reports on China, its mode of government, the particularities of its language, its morals and customs giving birth to the first European sinology (Brunet, III, 1028).
