To educate the neophytes, the author proposes to use the methods developed by Tournefort, Linné and Jussieu. This volume is accompanied by an album of engraved plates representing natural specimens enhanced with hand colors. Some are signed on the plate, R. Turpin. The name of Philibert would be in reality the pseudonym of a certain Legendre, "former Councillor at the Parliament", who, after "serious mistakes", had to change jobs and hid under the name Philibert which he used to publish six scientific works between 1797 and 1805 (according to Quérard).
