Japan - Lot 325
Japan TITSINGH (Isaac) Ceremonies used in Japan, for Weddings, Funerals, and the main Festivals of the year; followed by anecdotes on the reigning Dynasty of the Sovereigns of this Empire. Paris, Nepveu, 1822. 2/3 volumes in-16 : XXX, 127pp, IV (7 plates of which one is folding) / 2f., 139pp. (5 folding plates). A total of 12 plates (including a frontispiece and 6 folding plates). Contemporary speckled tan basane, decorated smooth spines, red title and tomonnieres, gilt roulette around the boards, slight rubbing, gilt roulette on the corners, marbled edges. A scholarly memoir on Japanese customs for weddings and funerals. The Dutch author Isaac Titsingh collected material for a monumental work on Japan during his stay in that country, but published only a few short essays during his lifetime. The Parisian publisher Nepveu posthumously published two volumes of selections from Titsingh's papers including Cérémonies usitées en Japon pour les mariages et les funérailles (1819). The first volume is composed of essays on Japanese wedding ceremonies, the second is devoted to funeral ceremonies and some other celebrations, and includes an account of "dosia", a powder and medicine recreation; the last volume, missing here, is a series of anecdotes about the shoguns. Rare, but unfortunately incomplete of the last volume. The complete work contains 20 plates.
