Marine - Engineering - Prototype [CANAL MARITIME DU MIDI - BORDEAUX-NARBONNE] Canal Maritime du Midi, Bordeaux-Narbonne. Project of competition for the establishment of the plans and the estimates, sponsored by the United States under the invocation of "Lafayette Canal". Set of documents contained in a superb leather case (superb quality) bearing the title "Key to the French Colonial Republic" on a brass plate with 2 medallions of the same material. 1/ In a blue silk box (restorations to be expected) with gilt braid bearing on the top plate: "Canal maritime du Midi Bordeaux-Narbonne - Lafayette concourse - To the French Government Ministry of Public Works. Paris - The navigable Loire. Nantes to Orleans - George W. Goethals & Co, Inc. New York". 2/ In a blue velvet binding (snap closures) with two inlaid medals with the effigy of Lafayette and Washington connected by a silver plate - 1913. All contained in a large blond calfskin case with gilt metal cut-out emblems of the United States and France attached to the lid (one detached, to be reassembled), with engraved legend on copper plate "Key to the French Colonial Republic". The plans, maps, correspondence and various projects predict that the canal will be 476 km long, 65 meters wide, 10 meters deep and will cost about 500 million dollars. The declaration of World War I less than a year later may have scuppered this grandiose project, judging by the luxury of the preliminaries. Probably a unique set of documents. Lot presented by Mr. Michel Convert, expert in old books and bibliophily.
