Midnight blue morocco - Lot 483
Midnight blue morocco ASSOUCY (Charles Coypeau d') Les Avantures de Monsieur d'Assoucy. Paris, Audinet, 1677. 2 volumes in one in-12; portrait frontispiece. Midnight blue morocco signed HIBARON (?), gilt title on the spine, double gilt fillet on the edges, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges. A fine copy. Charles Coypeau d'Assoucy (1605-1677), French poet, memoirist, composer and theorbo player. Emulator of Paul Scarron in the genre of burlesque poetry, he was the friend of Chapelle, Cyrano de Bergerac and Molière. A travelling musician, he travelled for fifteen years in France and Italy. Very rare first edition of this burlesque work in which the author pleasantly recounts his bizarre adventures, his misadventures and the imprisonments he had to endure during his bohemian life; he traveled through France in the company of a small troupe of artists who sang the tunes he composed. Pages 139 and following give details of the stay of Molière's troupe in the south of France.
