Greece BARTHÉLÉMY Journey of Young Anacharsis in Greece, in the middle of the fourth century before the vulgar era. Third edition. Paris, De Bure, 1790. 7 volumes in-8 (text) and an atlas in-4 containing 31 maps, plans and plates (numbered I to IV and 1 to 27). Light stain in the head margin on the last plates. Contemporary glazed calf, ornate smooth spines, red title and endpapers, small bumps to 2 headpieces, fine gilt garland framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges, small leather tears, corners dull, yellow edges. Nice copy. Le Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce, a masterpiece of erudition, composition and style, was a best-seller; Barthélemy worked on it for thirty years. Constructed in the form of fiction, the work proposes a crowd of facts and secondary notions which would tire in many treaties. The Voyage of Anacharsis makes us know the religious, civil, literary and philosophical history of the most enlightened nation of the Antiquity.
