[Paris, Cazin], 1785. 2 volumes in-16 : 161pp. 9 plates (including frontispiece) / 2f. 80 pp. 11 plates. A total of 20 erotic plates after drawings by Antoine Borel, engraved by François-Roland Elluin. Contemporary marbled fawn calf, decorated smooth spines, red title and endpapers, gilt triple fillet framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges and inside, gilt edges. A very nice copy. New edition of this great classic of erotic literature, a novel of initiation both pornographic and philosophical. The work appeared for the first time in 1748 and was immediately banned, which did not prevent it from being reprinted many times. This fake Cazin edition is illustrated with 20 free engravings out of text in first edition. The text is inspired by a moral affair involving a Jesuit, Father Girard (staged under the anagram Dirrag), and a young illuminated and mystifying penitent, Catherine Cadière (Éradice), who had accused him of "seduction, spiritual incest, magic and witchcraft".
