Red morocco - Lot 528
Red morocco [CROME (François MORIN, sieur de)] Dialogue between the maheustre and the manant. Containing the reasons of their debates & questions in these present troubles in the Kingdom of France. [Paris, Se], 1594. In-8, 123f. Eighteenth century red morocco, title and gilt fillets on smooth spine, gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, interior roulette, blue silk endpapers, gilt edges. Rare third edition of one of the most famous pamphlets of the religious wars. It is a dialogue between a gentleman supporter of Henri IV (the maheustre), and a Parisian ligueur (the manant), uncompromising Catholic and opponent of the aristocracy. The original text of this pamphlet (all in favor of the League) will be completely modified in the royalist direction (deletion of passages unfavorable to Henry IV and additions in his favor or directed against the League and the Sixteen) from its second edition (1594), whereas the entry of Henry IV in Paris signed the end of the League and the Council of the Sixteen (Brunet II, 670)(Barbier I - 3364). Provenance: From the library of R. Grandsire with his printed bookplate.
