GIRARD (Guillaume) - Lot 569
GIRARD (Guillaume) History of the life of the Duke of Épernon. Paris, Billaine, 1673. 3 parts in 3 volumes in-12; portrait of the Duke of Épernon in frontispiece. Contemporary fawn basane, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-pieces, small lack of leather at the foot of volume II, cold fillet framing the boards, gilt roulettes on the edges and inside, gilt edges. This French military and statesman, Jean-Louis de Nogaret, duc d'Épernon, is one of the most important figures of the reigns of Henri III, Henri IV and Louis XIII. Present at the side of Henri IV at the time of his assassination, he contributed to the proclamation of Marie de Médicis as regent; he was suspected of having ordered this assassination. The duke was held responsible by Richelieu for the failure of Fontarabie against the Spaniards. He was definitively dismissed from power by Richelieu. Work written by Guillaume Girard who was his secretary and historiographer for 22 years. Provenance: Printed bookplates of Jean-Baptiste Martin (18th century, from Bordeaux) as well as Philippe-Louis Bordes de Fortage, collector and bibliophile from Bordeaux, whose library was dispersed in 1924. He expressed himself in these terms on this subject: "I wish, says Mr. de Fortage in his last will and testament, that the important library I have patiently built up be sold at a public auction, in Bordeaux itself. The books that make up this library have been the charm and consolation of my life; I hope that they will also bring joy to the new owners whose shelves they will enrich.
