Aix-en-Provence - Lot 575
Aix-en-Provence GRÉGOIRE (Gaspard) Explanation of the ceremonies of the Corpus Christi of Aix-en-Provence, decorated with figures of the lieutenant of Prince d'Amour, of the King and batons of the bazoche, of the abbot of the city, and of the games of the devils, the razcaffetos, the Apostles, the Queen of Sheba, the Tirassons, the chevaux-frux, etc., and of the notated tunes, dedicated to this festival. Aix, David, 1777. In-12, 220 pp; a frontispiece portrait of René d'Anjou, 13 folding plates off-text, a few holes from spines without affecting the text or the figures. Untrimmed copy. ½ modern vellum, brown title page on smooth spine. The Corpus Christi instituted in 1264 by Pope Urban IV was primarily a celebration of the Eucharist; under the patronage of King René it changed its nature and became a large-scale event, with knights' tournaments, theatrical plays, parades and games taking place in a festive atmosphere. The Corpus Christi ceremonies were suspended during the Revolution.
